  1. Great episode! And I wholeheartedly agree with the general consensus of the show: There is one true RPG and its name is Shadowrun. All others are second fiddle.

  2. @ Tiny: sorry, but I’d call your perception kind of selective… 😉

The “progressive” Leverage RPG (with the so called ‘cortex plus’ engine) by Margaret Weis and its similarity to SR in general was mentioned. There are people who already thought about this…

…and already made use of it:

All in all: great episode! These views from a kind of distance are definitly worth to be spread. Thumbs up!

  3. Hi Mr Johnson, Hi Vox (how many X’s do you use?),

I’m listening to this podcast, and I’m hearing how sometimes we’re waiting for books to come out with updated rules, e.g. Rigger rules. Well, I don’t want to sound smarmy, but use the 4th or 3rd edition rules! Do it! Remember what Ross & Darryl just said? Edition wars are poo-poo!

I just had to share that. I love your podcast, and I love that you answered my questions not too long ago, which, by the way, one of them was about using different edition rules in your 5th game.

    Sincerely,
    Shift

    1. You make a good point. Lucky for us players, the GMs we play under are pretty good at making a call and moving on. Sometimes it falls in line with an old edition, sometimes it’s just made up on the spot. We really should look into 4e – there’s probably quite a bit in there we could poach for our 5e games.
      Thanks for your kind words!

  4. I totally agree with the character roles aspect. I tried D&D and you had the mage, warrior, rogue, etc and I couldn’t really roleplay because I was THAT role. I started learning shadowrun and I was like okay there’s a face, decker, mage, rigger, fighter. But then I saw the example characters in the 5th ed book and there were only a few that were directly THAT role.

My group could be seen as the decker, rigger, face, mage, sniper, and the muscle but it’s really Matrix addicted narcissist, Taxi driver paying a gambling debt, drug obsessed socialite, awakened troll hippy, an assassin with a score to settle, and a russian ork anarchist. Much more material to roleplay with rather than set roles.

    1. That’s one of the things I love about Shadowrun, too. Completely classless – although the Runners themselves may or may not be classless. 😉

  5. Found this show thanks to a backlink from my Shapcano archive, awesome stuff! Thanks for the shoutout!

I have a similar story to the epic rocket+chopper one here.
We’d just taken out a vampire’s lair on a highrise and the security company was responding in force with a heli bearing down on us on the roof.
I raised my tricked-out Ares Predator, rolled 15d6, and 8 of them exploded. Of those, 3 exploded.
I took down a chopper with a bloody pistol.

One of the best nights ever.
